What: Press conference to launch new report: “MIL façons de se faire évincer: Université de Montréal and Gentrification in Parc-Extension”
When: Wednesday, June 3rd, 10:30AM
Where: Place de la Gare Jean-Talon, in front of Metro Parc. (Location will allow for social distancing, please bring your mask)
Following Daniel Jutras’ entry into office as the new rector of the Université de Montréal, academics, researchers and community organizations are releasing a new report detailing the impact of the new Campus MIL and proposing measures to mitigate its consequences for Parc-Extension- a neighborhood that has been severely affected by both the housing crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Less than one year after the Campus MIL opened its doors, Parc-Extension residents are already feeling its impact. Evictions are on the rise, rents are skyrocketing, and support networks are destabilized as the housing market restructures to accommodate the influx of students and professionals.
Despite many missed opportunities, the report stresses that it is not too late for Université de Montréal to take action and will be calling on the University’s administration to adopt measures to respond to gentrification in the neighborhood- namely by collaborating with community groups, offering on-campus student housing, and supporting social and community housing projects.
